Stay in the loop

A traditional valley farm, nestled in the rolling hills of Mid Devon.

The Approach

The global food system currently poses significant challenges, contributing to environmental degradation, biodiversity loss, compromised human health, and the perpetuation of low animal welfare standards. We are driven by a mission to transform the food system, making sustainable, high-quality, and high-welfare food available to a network of people who believe in the importance of nutritious, delicious food that does not cost the earth.

We utilise traditional and regenerative farming methods to cultivate a diverse range of premium products, including cut flowers, grass fed beef, pasture raised chicken, grass fed lamb and apple juice. This regenerative approach aims to foster the growth of high-quality, diverse forage, ultimately enhancing soil health and moisture retention.

We believe that increased biodiversity fosters resilience in a changing climate. Our strategy involves planting and enhancing our hedgerows, woodland and orchards. By doing so, we aspire not only to rejuvenate the land but also to create an ecologically balanced environment that enhances the farm's adaptability and sustainability.

Native Breed Cattle | Pasture Raised Chickens | Rare Breed Sheep

  • Grass fed galloway cattle grazing on a field at Penstone Barton Farm during sunrise with trees and hills in the background.

    Native Breed Galloway Cattle

Our small herd of Galloways are a hardy bunch, out all year round. They rotate through a diverse mix of herbal lays, unimproved grassland and river fields.

We try to leave our pastures to grow tall where we can, mobbing our cattle through, eating and trampling the plants as they go. This evenly fertilises the fields and leaves the soil protected from the weather. Healthy, taller plants mean healthy deeper roots, feeding soil microbes and retaining moisture.

Our grass fed beef is rich in flavour and is available for click and collect direct from Penstone Barton farm.

    Pasture Raised Chickens

Our chickens are raised on the same pastures as our cattle, following them through the flatter fields. They get a new section of pasture each day giving them plants and insects to graze. This diversity gives the meat its rich colour.

We give our chickens a nutritious diet in addition to what they graze. This in turn help fertilise our fields evenly as the chickens move. This means we don’t need chemical or synthetic fertilisers and keeps our inputs low.

Our pasture raised chicken is available for click and collect direct from Penstone Barton Farm.

  • A primitive breed Castlemilk Moorit sheep and two lambs standing on green grass in the orchard at Penstone Barton Farm

    Rare Breed Castle Milk Moorits

We have a small flock of Castle Milk Moorits, a low impact, slow growing primitive breed. Their wool is prized for spinning and their meat distinct, almost venison-like. They are classed as an ‘at risk’ breed by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust (RBST).

Our sheep graze in rotation with our cattle and chickens. They prefer browsing the hedges and more obscure plants on the farm.

Grass fed rare breed hogget is available for click and collect direct from Penstone Barton Farm.

    Dried Flowers

Our flower growing season is limited by the British weather, so we dry a large range of our blooms to preserve their beauty through the winter months. We use the warmer drier months to begin our drying process, making use of our traditional Devon farm buildings.

Feral Flowers’ bunches of dried flowers are extremely long lasting if kept out of direct sunlight and are a fantastic sustainable gift.

The Land

Our valley encompasses steep rolling hills of unimproved grassland to the South and gently sloping herbal leys to the North.

In the valley bottom is a stream that flows through an untouched marshy network of ponds, eventually meeting a small snaking river in our meadows.

The mature cider and juicing orchards wrap around the South West facing hills from the farmyard and into the valley.

Two well trodden footpaths cut through the farm, one of which leads you to an award winning pub in only 20 minutes.

You can enjoy the footpaths and surrounding landscape by staying and relaxing at The Cider Barn or The Roost, both with their own wood fired hot tubs.
